“Lunchtime Discovery” Lecture Series: Genomics, Equity, and the Environment

The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) Office of Environmental Education and Public Affairs has teamed up with the NC Museum of Natural Sciences to host Lunchtime Discovery—a guest lecture series featuring experts from across the environmental fields on a variety of topics.
On February 15, RTI’s Melyssa Minto, PhD, presented as the featured speaker, describing her experience with the environment and genomics. During her presentation, titled, Genomics, Equity, and the Environment, Dr. Minto discussed her journey into the field of computational biology and her graduate work on using genomic data to predict how the brain rewires itself, which is significant for research on addiction, development, learning, and memory. She also shared her passions in creating equity in genomics research including her contributions to the Black Women In Computational Biology network.
