Focus Areas
Research, evaluate, and provide technical assistance for criminal legal organizations to promote public safety.
RTI's Justice Workplace and Workforce Advancements focus area engages in research related to police officer safety and improving the well-being and effectiveness of organizations within the criminal legal system. Researchers in this focus area use their expertise in criminology, organizational psychology, occupational stress and health, physical sciences, and public administration to conduct applied research, evaluation, and technical assistance for criminal legal organizations and to assess standards for technology, policies, and practices that promote public safety.
The team also examines recruiting and hiring practices in order to build capacity and strengthen public safety and law enforcement agencies; the effects of workplace stress and mental health challenges on employees and their work; and strategies to improve workplace culture, among other topics.
Projects vary from Advancing Service-oriented Policing through Inclusion, Relationship-building, & Engagement (ASPIRE): A National Initiative to Promote Innovations in Recruiting and Support of the Policing Workforce, a cooperative agreement with the Bureau of Justice Assistance, to projects included under the Criminal Justice Testing and Evaluation Consortium (CJTEC), a program of the National Institute of Justice that researches and evaluates technologies affecting the criminal justice community.
