RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. —Richard Reithinger, Ph.D., Vice President of Global Health at RTI International (RTI), a nonprofit research institute, is available to comment on the new Ebola outbreak in Guinea, which has been proclaimed an epidemic. Dr. Reithinger is an infectious disease expert with extensive experience managing health programs around the globe.
During the Ebola outbreak in Guinea from 2014-2016, RTI aided the Guinean government and supported USAID’s StopPalu project to mitigate the impact of Ebola on malaria treatment programs. Using these experiences, he can speak to the danger a new outbreak could pose to health systems that are already limited and stretched due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Public health officials in Guinea have already begun taking action in hopes of preventing a major widespread outbreak and the World Health Organization has quickly offered support to set up contact tracing efforts and treatment structures.
Dr. Reithinger has been published widely on the topics of malaria and other vector-borne disease epidemiology, case management, prevention, and control. He has extensive experience in managing and implementing programs focusing on malaria, neglected tropical diseases as well as zoonotic diseases such as avian influenza, COVID-19, and Ebola.
