Moral Injury, Ethical Challenges, and Turnover Intention: Insights from Two Studies
Saturday, October 14 at 8:30am.
Presenters: Gabrielle O'Keefe
Policing inherently involves making challenging decisions with an ethical component. However, numerous models and frameworks can be used to facilitate ethical decision-making. When these frameworks clash in application, a sense of moral or ethical dissonance is created. This can lead to moral distress and moral injury. In this session, presenters describe how three frameworks (deontology, consequentialism, and virtue ethics) can be applied in policing, how contradictions can lead to moral injury, why ethics matters in law enforcement training, and how different ethical orientations relate to hot-button issues, like turnover.
A 62-Year Mystery Solved: Identification of the Child Remains of Sharon Lee Gallegos (Little Miss Nobody) Using Innovative Technologies, Interagency Collaboration, and Investigative Determination.
Sunday, October 15 at 10:00am.
Presenters: Donia Slack and Dustin Driscoll
In July 1960, the body of “Little Miss Nobody” was discovered in Yavapai County, Arizona. Just10days earlier, four-year-old Sharon Lee Gallegos was abducted in front of her family in New Mexico. Limitations made it impossible to connect the two cases, and leads went cold. Decades later, the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office partnered with the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs), and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) to identify this little girl. This multiagency panel will discuss the use of purpose-built databases, novel technologies, and forensic genetic genealogy that returned a name to a murdered child. This remarkable success showcases the power of technology and how it can bring resolution to the most challenging cases.
*NIJ Director Nancy La Vigne will provide the introduction to this presentation.
Improving Community Safety: Mental Health Response Through Policing Partnerships.
Monday, October 16 at 11:30am.
Presenters: Brian Aagaard
Over the past half century, the role of police in the United States expanded, with communities increasingly relying on police officers as the default responders for many of society’s unaddressed problems. A significant portion of 911 calls concern substance use, mental health, and homelessness – issues outside of the training and core function of police officers. As a result, people in urgent need of services too often don’t get the type of help or follow-on aftercare they need. Join us and hear from leading researchers in this space as they discuss novel solutions to mental health response and policing resource allocation.
