Carmen Strigel leads RTI’s Center for Advanced Analytics and Visualization, which operates at the crossroads of AI research, data sciences, and integrated technology tools, elucidating actionable insights about human potential across sectors. In her 20+ years at RTI, Dr. Strigel’s work has specifically focused on the intersection of neuroscience, technology, and learning. She has designed, implemented, and researched technology that enhances learning, builds capacity, and facilitates information-based decision-making.

Illustratively, Dr. Strigel oversees the development of Loquat, open-source software using machine learning to capture, analyze, and track classroom speech patterns, as well as CurrantMobile™, a serious games approach to assess youth employability skills. She also contributes to RTI’s research on sensors and assessments.

Dr. Strigel designed Tangerine, open-source software that facilitates electronic data collection, continuous student assessment, and program monitoring. To date, Tangerine has been deployed in over 65 countries and 100 languages. In addition to her role at RTI, Dr. Strigel serves as CEO of Tangerine Central, a women-owned small business that grew out of RTI’s initial development of Tangerine. 

Elevating RTI’s scientific stature, Dr. Strigel has led over 25 research studies in over 30 countries. In addition to AI and technology, these studies focused on issues of early reading and mathematics learning, secondary science and English language instruction, inclusive education, and youth employability and life skills. She regularly contributes to books, articles, conferences, and blog posts in her field of work and serves on global task forces and advisory boards, such as the Brookings Institution, World Bank, or Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
