Brian Southwell is a Distinguished Fellow and Lead Scientist for Public Understanding of Science at RTI International. For much of his career, Dr. Southwell has found creative ways to use data to answer important questions about the effectiveness of communication interventions, which improve understanding and motivate behavior and about popular understanding of science. He has applied time-based techniques, multilevel modeling, and a range of quantitative and qualitative methods. In addition, Dr. Southwell regularly convenes experts, community partners, and practitioners to address ethical concerns and emerging issues. As a teacher and mentor for more than two decades, Dr. Southwell continues to be enthusiastic about helping students and professionals find rewarding career paths. 

At RTI, Dr. Southwell has supported work for many different clients, including the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, Food and Drug Administration, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Environmental Protection Agency, state and local agencies, foundations, and universities. 

In addition to his work as a social scientist at RTI, Dr. Southwell holds faculty appointments at Duke University, the University of Delaware, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He also serves on appointed committees for the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, including a consensus study on misinformation about science and the Standing Committee for Advancing Science Communication. In addition, Dr. Southwell is a public engagement workgroup consultant to the Advisory Committee to the Director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 

Dr. Southwell previously served the University of Minnesota as a tenured faculty member and Director of Graduate Studies. He also has worked with organizations such as the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as a visiting fellow and Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide. 

Dr. Southwell has authored or coauthored more than 150 journal articles, chapters, and award-winning books, and he has extensive experience as an editor and editorial board member. In addition, Dr. Southwell created and hosts a weekly public radio show, The Measure of Everyday Life, for WNCU as well as regularly writing commentary and speaking in venues such as the Aspen Ideas Festival and serving as a scientific advisor for projects like NOVA Science Studio.
