Larry Kroutil

Larry Kroutil serves as operations director for reporting on the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, known as NSDUH. This long-running survey, funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, is the most comprehensive drug use and behavioral health study in the United States.

Mr. Kroutil, who joined RTI in 1990, is skilled in working with large surveys, technical writing, and developing specifications for data editing. From his work with NSDUH, he has in-depth knowledge of Controlled Substances Act drug scheduling. In his current role, he supervises and reviews NSDUH national reports, monitors data sources for prescription drug changes that are relevant to the questionnaire, and serves as a senior advisor on the task for logically editing data. He also writes methodological reports on the impacts of NSDUH questionnaire changes and survey redesign activities, such as measurement of synthetic drug use.

Mr. Kroutil has an academic background in biology and public health. Earlier in his career, he conducted research at Duke University Medical Center, contributing to studies of alcohol use and screening for alcoholism.
