He studies the absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion and toxicity (ADMET) and pharmacokinetics (PK) of xenobiotics using in vivo and in vitro models for industrial clients and public agencies, including for the National Toxicology Program (NTP), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Dr. Knudsen’s research has been published in more than 30 peer-reviewed journals, focusing on drug metabolism and mechanistic toxicology.

Before joining RTI in 2023, Dr. Knudsen was a senior scientist at BASF, where he developed novel assays to conduct ADME assessments of lead candidates for pesticide applications by using novel and representative invertebrate systems. He also previously worked at the NIH conducting disposition and toxicology studies of nominated chemicals, with a focus on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and brominated flame retardants and their effects in barrier tissues, especially the blood-brain barrier and blood-placenta barrier.
