New Elsevier/RTI Press book highlights analytical methods used to address chemical exposures and health issues surrounding e-cigarettes

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC— A new volume in the Emerging Issues in Analytical Chemistry series from Elsevier and RTI Press addresses many issues surrounding electronic cigarettes and how analytical methods can support the manufacturing, labeling, distribution, testing, regulation and monitoring for consistency of products.

The book, titled Analytical Assessment of E-Cigarettes: From Contents to Chemical and Particle Exposure Profiles, examines the chemistry and physics involved in aerosol production, inhalation, deposition, chemical exposure and effect assessment. The book is designed to help inform policy makers, e-cigarette users and the public about the potential health impact of e-cigarettes.

“E-cigarettes come in the form of a variety of devices, formulations and flavors that are not subjected to quality control due to the lack of industry standards and limited product oversight,” said Jonathan Thornburg, Ph.D., director of exposure and aerosol technology at RTI and co-author of the book. “This volume discusses how analytical methods can address the public’s concern about e-cigarette inhalation, exposure and health outcomes.”

The book offers a background on e-cigarettes and aerosol drug delivery services, as well as aerosol drug delivery services and e-cigarettes, constituents of nicotine-containing liquid dosing formulations, typical use scenarios and associated aerosol emissions, and chemical exposures and pharmacological and toxicological effect profiles. Descriptions of the analytical methods used to characterize the chemicals in e-cigarette formulations and emissions are included.

The “Emerging Issues in Analytical Chemistry” series is co-edited by Brian Thomas, Ph.D, principal scientist in Discovery Sciences at RTI International.

The book is available on Amazon and the Elsevier Store.
