Identifying and eliminating PFAS, lead, asbestos, and other hazards from the environment so communities can live, learn, and play free.
Environmental contaminants impact everyone. However, they have a disproportionate effect on those of us living in vulnerable communities. Whether it’s the water we drink, the food we consume, or the air we breathe, we all deserve safe and equitable access to life’s essentials without fear for our health.
The RTI CleanPlus portfolio delivers solutions to identify and eliminate environmental hazards in schools, childcare centers, homes, and more. Informed and guided by the research and expertise of RTI International, the portfolio also provides the methods for utility companies to ensure their services and facilities remain safe from chemical exposure and compliant with local, state, and federal regulations.
Business and homeowners, childcare and school administrators, and utility providers can access a variety of programs and studies that support contaminant identification, lab and data analysis, and mitigation consultation.

Clean Classrooms™ for Carolina Kids
This free program is part of a legislatively mandated effort in North Carolina to identify and eliminate lead and asbestos from NC public schools, licensed childcare centers, and licensed family childcare homes.
Clean Water for Georgia Kids™
A free program that works to identify and eliminate lead from drinking and cooking water where children in the state of Georgia learn and play, including schools and childcare centers.
Clean Water for US Kids™
According to the EPA, up to 20% of a person’s total exposure to lead can come from drinking water. The Clean Water for US Kids™ program mails water sampling kits to home residents who want to better understand their water quality.
In our citizen-science model, residents are given step-by-step instructions on proper sample collection and submission. RTI International experts analyze samples, share results, and provide tap-specific, no- or low-cost solutions to reduce or eliminate lead exposure.
Clean Air for Carolina Kids
This study partners with childcare centers to monitor their facilities for air pollution harmful to children’s health. It includes the continuous real-time air monitoring of a childcare facility’s exterior for a period of two years.
Forever Chemicals in Well Water
The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry notes that people can consume per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) via the water they drink, the foods they eat, and the air they breathe. The Forever Chemicals in Well Water study is partnering with homeowners and residents to test the prevalence of these “forever chemicals” in their private well water.
PREDICT Healthy Homes Study
This participatory science study is a joint effort between Indiana University, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, and RTI International to test homes for lead in soil, dust, and water.
Preschool Environmental Experiences and Development Study
The Preschool Environmental Experiences and Development Study (PEDS) partners with parents and preschool facilities on a voluntary basis to test for common contaminants in the everyday environments of children between the ages of three to five.
PFAS and Heavy Metals in Guatemala City Tap Water Study
This study was a collaboration with the Universidad del Valle de Guatemala (UVG) to better understand tap water quality in Guatemala City. With our citizen-science approach, we engaged 113 household participants to collect water samples. Results showed three metals over Guatemalan drinking standards and a detailed picture of the complications and complexities affecting remediation.
