Nathan Mann

Nathan Mann is an expert in tobacco control research specializing in the health and economic impacts of tobacco use. His research has focused on the impact of tobacco policies and interventions on the health and economic costs resulting from tobacco use. He has conducted tobacco economics research at the national level for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and at the state-level for Florida, New York, North Dakota, Kansas and Vermont. Mr. Mann’s work in the field of tobacco-related modeling was recognized in the “2014 U.S Surgeon General’s Report: The Health Consequences of Smoking – 50 Years of Progress” (in Appendix 15.1 – Tobacco Control Simulation Models). 

Mr. Mann’s research has also focused on the health and economic impacts of tobacco use internationally. He has worked with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to conduct tobacco investment cases for World Health Organization (WHO) Framework Convention for Tobacco Control (FCTC) member countries. The tobacco investment cases estimate the health burden and economic costs associated with tobacco use and demonstrate the benefits of investing in proven tobacco control policies and interventions. Mr. Mann has presented results from the FCTC Tobacco Investment Cases to government agencies, government officials and key stakeholders from civil society around the world.

Mr. Mann is also a nationally-recognized subject matter expert in the field of tobacco cessation quitlines. He has analyzed and evaluated quitline data for New York, Vermont, Florida, the CDC's Office on Smoking and Health, and the American Legacy Foundation. Mr. Mann helped CDC develop and implement the National Quitline Data Warehouse (NQDW), the first and only national repository of state quitline data. He also led RTI’s evaluation of the impact of CDC’s Tips From Former Smokers® Campaign on quitlines. His research has demonstrated the robust effect of mass media on quitline call volume and utilization. He has published results from his work with quitlines in numerous peer-reviewed publications and presented his work at scientific conferences and professional meetings.
