Julianne Payne, PhD, studies efforts to improve worker health, safety, and well-being by promoting organizational and lifestyle change. With an academic background in sociology, Dr. Payne uses both qualitative and quantitative methodologies to understand how workplace experiences enhance and detract from worker outcomes.

Dr. Payne has evaluated several initiatives to improve worker health, safety, and well-being, including:

  • The Carolina Center for Healthy Work Design and Worker Well-being (funder: CDC)
  • The North Carolina Occupational Safety and Health Education and Research Center (funder: CDC)
  • The National Healthy Worksite Program (funder: CDC)
  • The Health Equity in the Workforce Initiative (funder: American Heart Association)

Dr. Payne has also worked on initiatives to strength and transform the U.S. workforce, with an emphasis on the healthcare industry. For example, she has conducted formative research for Project Firstline, a CDC-funded initiative to help all health care workers obtain foundational knowledge of infection control needed to protect the nation from infectious disease threats. She has also evaluated initiatives focusing on the peer recovery services, upstream drivers of health, and healthcare delivery reform.
