Jamie L. Humphrey

Jamie Humphrey is a Health Geographer and Research Public Health Analyst in RTI International’s Center for Health Analytics, Media, and Policy. Dr. Humphrey has more than 10 years of experience using interdisciplinary quantitative and geospatial methods to develop, implement, and oversee research at the intersection of geography and public health. With a focus on geographic patterns and inequalities, she studies the social and spatial epidemiology of the built environment and a variety of health outcomes and behaviors. Dr. Humphrey has extensive experience in understanding the complex interactions between demographic, socioeconomic and environmental factors that influence health and how those factors and interactions can be quantified to better understand health outcomes.

Currently, Dr. Humphrey is an associate project director for several projects that explore place-based inequities including: the development of a Local Social Inequity score (RTI Rarity), the spatio-temporal evolution of opioid-related mortality and its relationship with community resources, and the spatial analysis of underage tobacco sales in New York.  She serves as the geospatial task lead on two ecological projects- one that explores the relationship between historical redlining, racial residential segregation, and cardiometabolic outcomes, and one that uses contextual data from the social and built environment to predict child maltreatment. Dr. Humphrey also provides subject matter expertise on the creation and curation of area-based measures related to the social determinants of health.

Prior to joining RTI, Dr. Humphrey was the Director of Research and Evaluation in the Bureau of Equitable Health Systems at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Drexel University where she examined the intersection of air pollution, cardiovascular disease, and community-level violence. She has published on topics including, neighborhoods and child/adolescent health; the Hispanic health paradox; measurement and identification of neighborhoods; the role of mobility in exposure to socioeconomic contexts; the intersection of indoor air quality, lung function, and socioeconomic status; climate change and indoor air quality; and the moderating impact of community-level violence on the air pollution-cardiovascular disease relationship. She was also a Postdoctoral Fellow at the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, University of Colorado Boulder, and currently holds a Research Associate position at Drexel University’s Dornsife School of Public Health.
