Williams brings more than 10 years of experience delivering analytical excellence to the public sector
RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. - Matthew Williams, Ph.D., a senior research statistician at nonprofit research institute RTI International, has been appointed to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Technical Advisory Committee (BLSTAC). Dr. Williams will serve as a Special Government Employee (SGE) member, where he will leverage his expertise in statistics to develop advice and recommendations for the U.S. Department of Labor.
The BLSTAC is made up of 16 members from academia, research and industry. Their charge is to advise the Commissioner of Labor Statistics on technical aspects of the collection and formulation of economic measures, such as accuracy and relevancy of data on employment and unemployment, prices, productivity, compensation and working conditions.
“I’m honored to be appointed to the BLSTAC,” said Dr. Williams. “The charge of the group is to better the statistics industry, ensuring the BLS is following the latest, and most equitable practices for performing statistical analyses on complex economic issues. I’m proud that this position aligns with the mission of RTI International, grappling with technical challenges to improve the human condition.”
Duties for BLSTAC appointees include:

Commenting on papers and presentations developed by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Developing research projects to address problems they uncover with statistics.

Joining discussions on the types of economic statistics that should be expanded or improved and areas where statistics are no longer relevant.
With more than 10 years of experience, Dr. Williams specializes in developing and evaluating methods to apply Bayesian analysis to complex survey data, such as those from multistage household surveys. Prior to joining RTI, he provided consulting for the U.S. Department of State, NASA, and the U.S. Forest Service.
