RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. – David Spiro has been promoted to Vice President for Food Security, Agriculture, Environment, and Water in the International Development Group (IDG) business unit at RTI International, a nonprofit research and international development institute.
In his new role, Spiro will lead a new division for food security, agriculture, environment, and water in IDG’s new Sustainable Growth & Resilience technical unit. The division will design and implement the next generation of multisectoral resilience programs to achieve better management of natural resources and environmental conservation, while addressing food security challenges. Spiro will be responsible for developing strategies that integrate multisectoral approaches to solve the complex development challenges that cut across these sectors to respond to climate change, build resilience, and promote economic growth.
“David is a strategic thinker who connects the dots across interconnected sectors,” said Paul Weisenfeld, Executive Vice President for International Development. “As Vice President, David will continue to play a key role in growing RTI’s portfolio in these sectors and delivering results for our clients and the countries and communities in which we work.”
Spiro is a career international development professional. He spent 13 years abroad leading programs in education, nutrition, food security and governance. Spiro came to RTI in 2011 and has held leadership positions abroad and in the United States. From 2011 to 2016, Spiro led RTI’s Regional Office in Jakarta, Indonesia. Since returning to the U.S., Spiro has spearheaded successful growth strategies for IDG’s water and environment programs.
Across his career Spiro has worked in Indonesia, Nepal, Cambodia, Bangladesh, Nigeria and the Philippines. He has a global master of arts degree from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University and bachelor’s degree in International Studies from Colby College.
