Reducing school crime events and status offense complaints
Additional evidence for school justice partnerships
Silver, I. A., Bechtel, K., & Dawes, D. (2025). Reducing school crime events and status offense complaints: Additional evidence for school justice partnerships. Journal of Experimental Criminology. Advance online publication. https://doi.org/10.1007/s11292-025-09680-x
ObjectivesThe current study sought to examine the effects of School Justice Partnerships (SJPs) on crime events that occurred during school and status offense complaints to the juvenile justice system.MethodsA random-intercept interrupted time series (ITS) model was estimated to examine if the implementation of SJPs reduced the rate of school crime events and status offense complaints (respectively) across North Carolina (100 counties) from 2006 to 2022.ResultsThe random intercept ITS models illustrated that the implementation of a SJP was associated with an immediate reduction in both school crime events and status offense complaints. However, the immediate effects of SJPs on school crime events appeared to rebound over time.ConclusionsThe findings provide more promising evidence for SJPs, suggesting that they might lead to beneficial outcomes within schools and the community. Further research, however, is needed to ensure that the immediate effects of SJPs continue over time.
