Nicholas Thomas

Nicholas Thomas is a public health researcher within the Justice Practice Area. He studies various forms of family and community violence, particularly intimate partner violence (IPV), structural risk factors, and firearms research among understudied communities, with recent projects including analyses of suicides among Black youth in Florida and firearm morbidity and mortality among children and teens. He is also interested in research about violence as it relates to the fields of law enforcement and the military. Dr. Thomas contributes to several projects at RTI, including the Support for Community Police, Model Precinct Program in Honduras; pursuing funding for additional international justice projects; and working on gun violence, community safety, and IPV projects.

Prior to joining RTI in 2023, Dr. Thomas was a research associate and program manager with the Florida Violent Death Reporting System, where he managed staff, oversaw day-to-day operations, and engaged in outreach to law enforcement agencies throughout the state. He trained in econometric analytical techniques during his doctoral studies and is well-versed in applying public health theory in the development of interventions and other types of programming.
