Candise Henry

Senior Energy Specialist

Education

Postdoctoral Researcher, Carnegie Institution for Science, Stanford University

PhD, Earth Science, Duke University

BA, Earth Science, Columbia University

Candise Henry is an energy expert and staff manager at RTI. Her expertise is in energy systems analysis with a focus on understanding the interactions between electricity demand, power generation, and climate change. She uses a variety of methods from geosciences (wavelet analysis, spatial statistics, finite-difference methods), economics (time series analysis, multivariate regression), and engineering (multi-objective optimization, signal processing) to develop both statistical and physically based energy and environmental models. Dr. Henry has been involved in the development of various optimization-based models focused on the energy sector, including linking partial equilibrium with general equilibrium models, developing RTI’s capacity expansion model ALPSS, supporting modeling efforts to compare different power sector model outputs, among others.

Currently, she leads RTI’s support to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to produce the biennial U.S. non-CO2 greenhouse gas emissions projections for the U.S. contribution to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Climate Action Report. She also leads work to help the U.S. government capture the impacts of climate change in economy-wide modeling frameworks, including computable general equilibrium and short-run macroeconomic models. Her recent work includes energy justice analyses, particularly examining the impacts (in terms of health and affordability) of energy and transportation policies on disproportionately impacted communities both domestically and internationally.

Highlights from Dr. Henry's international projects include quantifying the jobs created from renewable energy investments in Kenya; assessing the community economic benefits associated with sales of productive use of energy (PUE) products in Liberia; identifying the spatial overlap between least-cost electricity systems and energy poor communities in Guatemala; and developing low-cost approaches for electrifying hard-to-reach communities in Papua New Guinea.

Before joining RTI, Dr. Henry was a postdoctoral research scientist at the Carnegie Institution for Science at Stanford University, where she helped develop an electricity system model to research efforts towards a near-zero emissions electricity sector. She also previously worked at a solar company in sub-Saharan Africa, managing and carrying out environmental impact assessment projects, leading efforts to collect and analyze electricity demand data, and participating in grid planning.

Get To Know Candise Henry

Dr. Henry shared what sparked her passion for climate work, the best thing about working at RTI, and a book that everyone should read.

I grew up in Taipei, Taiwan, at a time when air pollution from the transportation and industrial sectors was bad but rapidly improving. I experienced firsthand the benefits of environmental regulations for major emitters on human health. This helped shape my interest in environmental policymaking.

RTI puts science and people first. We will never put out anything (be it technologies, publications and presentations, or others) that is not backed up by stringent research.

I recommend Bill Gates's book "How to Avoid a Climate Disaster". He very succinctly describes the climate change issue and provides various potential solutions in a digestible way. It's also a shameless plug because I was a scientific reviewer/fact-checker for the book (you can find my name in the acknowledgements).

Outside the Office

Dr. Henry has backyard chickens that live in a coop called “Cluckingham Palace.” She is an avid yogi, and she used to be on the rowing team in college.
