Barrett Montgomery is a drug use epidemiologist with nearly 10 years of experience in the epidemiology of drug use behaviors. His work focuses on addressing public health issues related to alcohol and drug use, including excessive alcohol use, opioid misuse, and access to behavioral health services.

His primary interests are the socioenvironmental influences on mental health and drug use, how to measure these effects, and how they affect our most vulnerable populations. Dr. Montgomery is especially interested in translations of these findings to policy, as well as in policy itself as a driver of public health outcomes.

He has led and contributed to epidemiological research on recreational cannabis policy, syringe sale policy, facilitators of and barriers to behavioral health services, sustainability strategies for evidence-based interventions, and economic evaluations of public health investments and drug court programs. His skill set is largely quantitative and includes management of large administrative databases, hierarchical linear modelling, econometric methods (e.g., difference in differences, event studies, two-part models), and prediction using ensemble or other machine learning techniques.

Dr. Montgomery is a member of the College on Problems of Drug Dependence.
