RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C.— Tami L. Mark, PhD, a researcher specializing in opioid and substance use disorders and treatment at RTI International, a nonprofit research institute, is available for media interviews on the recent U.S. Department of Justice’s guidance on how the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) protects people with opioid use disorder (OUD) who are in treatment or recovery, including those who take medication to treat their OUD.
“The Justice Department guidance clarifying that people with opioid use disorders are protected under the Americans with Disabilities Act is an important step in ensuring that people in remission from an opioid use disorder are not discriminated against and do not face barriers to accessing effective medications that support their recovery,” said Dr. Mark.
Dr. Mark’s work includes research on medication-assisted treatment for opioid and alcohol use disorders, challenges to accessing care and the risks of discontinuing or suddenly tapering off opioid use. She has authored more than 130 scholarly peer-reviewed journal articles and numerous government reports and was a contributing author to the healthcare systems chapter of The Surgeon General’s Report on Alcohol, Drugs and Health.
Also, Dr. Mark served on advisory committees for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO), the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation (ASPE), the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and the National Quality Forum (NQF).
